DENVER DRILL - 2 FIREFIGHTERS

CONFINED SPACE PUSH/PULL - 2 FIREFIGHTERS - DENVER DRILL

This form of the Denver drill requires two firefighters and is used when the victims’ head is toward the window.

  • Rescuer 1:

  1. Climbs through window and over the downed firefighter to the bottom or leg end.

  2. His first responsibility is to roll the victim on his back.

  3. Reset PASS, check for air by cracking face piece seal.

  4. If rescuer 2 is at the window he can send out the mayday, if rescuer 2 is not there rescuer 1 must send out the mayday before proceeding.

  5. Rescuer 1 must now place the victim in a seated position; this can be accomplished by pulling the victims’ arms until the victim is up and in a seated position.

  • Rescuer 2:

    rt122.jpg

  1. Now that the victim is in the seated position there will be room at the bottom of the window.

  2. Climb in the window and drop down to the floor.

  3. Position yourself behind the victim in a squatting position.

  4. Keep the feet flat against the floor, legs spread apart.

  5. Place your SCBA bottle flat against the wall.

*NOTE: all moves involving 2 rescuers must be coordinated with the ready/ready/go

  • If the victim is too far away rescuer 1 and 2 must work together to move the victim closer to the base of the window.

  • Rescuer 1:

    rt124.jpg

  1. Reach down and bend the victims’ legs up by lifting at the knees.

  2. Using one foot (it doesn’t matter which one) pin one of the victims’ feet so it can’t slide out.

  3. This pinned foot becomes a pivot point for the lift.

  4. Rescuer 1s other foot slides between the victims’ legs tight up against the crotch area.

  5. Lean over and grab the victims’ harness straps with both hands.

  • Rescuer 1 and 2 working together:

  1. R 1 leans back using his weight to pull against the victims’ harness straps.

  2. R 1 keeps one of the victims’ feet pinned to the ground.

  3. R 2 pushes up on the victims’ bottle.

  4. This action causes the victim to rise up off the floor.

  5. As the victim rises up R 2 pulls the victim onto his knees, R 1 allows the victim to settle onto R 2s knees.

  • Rescuer 2 should announce that he has the victim resting on his knees. This allows rescuer 1 to reposition for final removal.

  • Rescue 1 and 2 final move to remove victim out window:

    rt121.jpg

  1. R 1 drops to his knees and leans in between the victims’ legs.

  2. R 1 places the victims’ legs over each shoulder. The goal is to get as far up on the their thighs as possible.

  3. R 1 now moves to a squatting position, keeping the victims’ legs on his shoulders.

  4. R 1 reaches around the victims’ thighs, grabbing his hands and holding them in the victims’ lap.

  1. R 2 prepares for the lift by grabbing the bottom of the victims’ air tank.

  • Ready/ready/go-last lift:

    rt125.jpg

  1. The command is given.

  2. R 1 lifts with his legs, driving the victim toward the window.

  3. R 2 lifts the SCBA pack and bottle up with his arms.

  4. R 2 shifts his head to one side to allow more room for bottle to slide up and over the windowsill.

  5. Through teamwork the victim is lifted and driven up over the windowsill.

  • Outside assistance:

  1. If available, another rescuer should be up the ladder and at the window. He should reach in and assist R 1 and R 2 with the lift. Once the victim is up and on the windowsill the outside rescuer can move down the ladder taking the victim with him.

  • *Note: Once R 2 feels the weight of the victims’ bottle resting on the ledge he needs to remove his hands from the windowsill to keep from breaking his hands or fingers.
